Smoke left her lips with a brief smile. I was sitting in a local diner downtown, three weeks since the sun went dark. This town, my hometown, was a short stop on a longer journey—for business. I reckoned that coffee with an old friend would be light; quiet reverence for a shared history.

It was anything but. The world had shifted from the realm of the living into a waking nightmare; mass psychosis was keeping anyone from noticing. At the end of our meal, she invited me over for coffee the following morning. So, I stayed awake all night and drove to her place on the dot.
